YouTube Kids adding human curated channel collections, more parental restrictions

"Even though YouTube's terms of service say [the site] is for ages 13 and up", says Golin, "the platform is loaded with cartoons, nursery rhyme videos, toy commercials and all sorts of content for young children".

After several months of content controversy, the Google-owned video platform has announced new features that allow parents to create a white-listed, non-algorithmic version of its Kids app.

"It is our hope that these additional options will allow every family to have the experience they want in the YouTube Kids app", wrote James Beser, product director for YouTube Kids, in the post announcing the new features for the app.

Improved search-off control for an even more contained experience: Parents have always been able to turn search off within the YouTube Kids app, but starting this week turning search off will limit the YouTube Kids experience to channels that have been verified by the YouTube Kids team. "This means that search off will not include recommendations from the broader YouTube Kids corpus", YouTube said.

YouTube notes that parents who do not want access to the new features will be able to keep the current version of YouTube Kids.

YouTube Kids now offers a set of trusted channels that have been chosen by the YouTube Kids team and delivered by partners such as Sesame Workshop and PBS KIDS.

Keeping the momentum, OnePlus shed light on the design of OnePlus 6 smartphone and confirmed that it will embrace a glass back . A UK-based online mobile accessories retailer, Mobile Fun listed several cases for the OnePlus 6 by in-house case maker Olixar.

"YouTube just can't get their heads around the fact that when you're expressly providing content for kids, there is an ethical need for an actual human being viewing it with their eyes and ears before it gets inside a child's brain".

YouTube also stated that they do receive human flagged videos in addition to the algorithm marked videos.

Parents can select the trusted channels by navigating to Profile Settings and choosing from the available collections. This feature will be rolled out later this year.

"Automated flagging enables us to act more quickly and accurately to enforce our policies", YouTube said, adding that since introducing the system, more than half of videos removed for violent extremism had fewer than 10 views.

The new feature gives new choices to parents to further customize YouTube Kids app.

It's the kind of control parents have been asking for from the popular app, but it also puts the onus on them to filter content.
