Snapchat unveils new version of Spectacles

Spectacles could be paired with Snapchat app one day. Three new colors are available, onyx, ruby, and sapphire, with two different lenses per color variant. The potential was too alluring to pass up, and so rather than give up on the project altogether, Snap talked to its consumers and employees alike to see what went wrong the first time around and how the next Spectacles could succeed. The second generation eyewear is thinner than its predecessor and generally sleeker. While Snapchat made a huge amount of units, they only shipped around 150000 - causing them to lose around $40 million in merchandise and forcing them to lay off around a dozen people.

The second-generation Spectacles add several new features and enhancements to the company's first wearable camera. The company will also only be selling the Spectacles online.

A Snap spokesperson told CNN the company overestimated initial demand, which was a business mistake, but not a failure of the product.

Initially they were available only from vending machines called Snapbots that the company randomly installed around the United States, and then from a pop-up store in NY.

Snapchat has sought to expand out from simply being a social media platform, moving into the sunglasses industry.

When Snapchat first launched its Spectacles in November 2016, users flocked to Snapchat vending machines around the country to get their hands on a pair of the glasses that promised hands-free video.

Version 2.0 of Spectacles is now capable of taking photos and it has a water-resistant body. The case, which also doubles as a charger, is also splash proof. With this new pair of glasses, you can capture images and can take videos as well, this time this all can be achieved in HD resolution.

The Spectacles are available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and France starting Thursday.
