HSE confirms 17 women have died as a result of CervicalCheck controversy

Her decision to step down comes on the back of Health Minister Simon Harris' comments that he can't have confidence in the managers of Cervical Check.

Speaking later on RTÉ's 6.1 News, Mr Lynch said just two of the 17 women who died had been informed that their smear tests were subject to review. The figures came to light after terminally-ill mother Vicky Phelan settled her case.

"It's a disgusting cancer to get from the point of view of the side effects after treatment, for younger women in particular", she said.

The Chairperson of the HSE Serious Incident Management Team said 162 of the 208 women affected by the screening controversy were not told that a review had been conducted by CervicalCheck, or of the outcome.

Harris said he hoped the HSE or the State would not defend any other cases there may be similar to the Vicky Phelan case.

The Attorney General has been asked to see if any cases similar to Vicky Phelan's are being taken so they can be settled without going to the courts.

The HSE has said in a statement that approximately 3,000 women In Ireland have been diagnosed with cervical cancer since 2008, and approximately half (1,482) of these cases were notified to CervicalCheck.

It has led to a controversy over smear test results where a number of women may have been wrongly given the all clear after their cancer tests.

Deputy Donnelly said, "It's completely unacceptable that women affected by these screening errors continue to be left in the dark".

The HSE has issued a statement in relation to Kildare women in the CervicalCheck programme.

A suggested quote for the Minister within the memo stated: 'I acknowledge the severe distress that this issue has caused to the patient involved, and to her family.

Mr Harris said he is now moving towards establishing a commission of investigation to uncover the extent of this controversy.

Ms Phelan also revealed that she received a phone call from the Taoiseach's press secretary.

The news means that more than 208 women may have been affected by the controversy.

Solicitor Cian O'Carroll, who represented Ms Phelan, has said the latest revelations are "shocking" and described CervicalCheck's conduct as appalling.

By the time she had another smear test in 2014 she had cervical cancer.

The HSE has said it will provide further information and updates over the coming days on cervicalcheck.ie and anyone with concerns may contact the CervicalCheck information phone line on 1800 45 45 55.
