Revellers soak up the sun over the bank holiday weekend

The long bank holiday weekend in early May has never been this warm since its introduction back in 1978.

The previous record was set in 1995, when temperatures peaked at 28.6C.

If temperatures reach that level it will be the hottest in 40 years, according to Sky weather presenter Jo Edwards.

The maximum average temperatures for May are 13C (55.4F) in the North and 16C (42.8F) in the South.

At 10.53am, the Met Office Tweeted: "BREAKING NEWS we've just smashed the temperature record for the warmest early May Bank Holiday Monday, with 24.2 °C at Herstmonceux".

Sunday saw highs of 26C in Heathrow, and Scotland and Northern Ireland had their hottest day of the year so far, with Edinburgh recording temperatures of 22.3C and Katesbridge 21C.

It's official - today is the hottest May Day bank holiday Monday since records began.

The RAC predicts 1.91 million vehicle journeys on Monday will be made with traffic expected to peak between 10am to 4pm.

"It will be cooler around the south east in the mid to high twenties".

Nearly all of the United Kingdom is basking in a heatwave that fell perfectly in line with the first May Bank Holiday, but temperatures in London and the south east are set to reach scorchio heights.

But forecasters warned the heatwave is not set to last, with the weather for the rest of the month described as "changeable".

Andy Page, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office said: "We can't promise wall to wall sunshine for everyone this Bank Holiday weekend, however, it's looking like most of us will get some prolonged warm sunshine".

"We're still going to see some dry days, but there's still going to be some wet days mixed in as well".

"So it doesn't look like it's going to carry on in a similar kind of vein to high pressure in charge, sunshine, light winds, high temperatures, that we have now".

He said temperatures will generally be above normal, but this will depend on whether it is a sunny day or a sunny wetter day. PA Wire/PA Images People look at cherry trees in blossom as they enjoy the warm and sunny weather in Greenwich Park, south London.
