At the start of National Police Week, the Solomon P. Ortiz Center was filled Monday morning for a special ceremony to honor area law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty.

Allery was fatally shot by 28-year-old Melvin Gene Delong, of Belcourt, after a pursuit on January 18, 2017. When the officers arrived on the scene, there was a brief conversation between the officers and a male suspect who produced a handgun and shot Patrolman Leo.

Officer Cox's friends, family and a delegation from the Rockford Police Department attended the vigil. He added that based on the current pace, the memorial will run out of rooms to carve names on the wall by the year 2050.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day during the nationally celebrated Police Week.

Since the first recorded death in 1791, over 20,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have been killed in the line of duty.

Drew County Sheriff's Deputy Timothy Braden gave his life while serving and protecting his community.
