Elon Musk: Tesla Autopilot system 'prevented severe injury' in 60mph crash

In a couple of recent tweets Musk downplayed the accident itself, emphasizing the fact that the only injury the Tesla driver had sustained was a broken ankle, when, he argued, it would have been much worse in any other vehicle.

In one of those accidents, a woman in Utah broke her foot after she slammed into a truck when her auto allegedly ran a red light while it was in autopilot mode.

"What's actually unbelievable about this accident is that a Model S hit a fire truck at 60 m.p.h. and the driver only broke an ankle", he added. "An impact at that speed usually results in severe injury or death", the CEO tweeted.

Tesla's stock price slipped Monday following another autopilot crash, this time in Utah, which the NTSB said it would investigate alongside its other now open investigation into the fatal crash of a Model X in California in March.

The motorist suffered a broken ankle and was taken to a hospital while a firefighter escaped unharmed.

"The number one issue at the heart of the Tesla investment debate is whether the company is now operating at a low level of utilization of a very large industrial complex, where incremental revenue can bring large incremental gross margins and improvement of cash consumption, or the next 50-100% of growth in revenue brings forth other calls on cash and does not materially move the company in the direction of a fully self-funding existence", they wrote.

The National Transportation Safety Board said last week it was investigating a Tesla accident in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on 8 May that killed two teenagers and injured another - the agency's fourth active probe into Tesla crashes.

Regulators are also looking into the performance of the Autopilot system in the March crash of a Tesla Model X SUV that crashed on a California highway.

Though Tesla - and the self-driving vehicle industry - certainly has a red target on its back as of late, Musk is confident that advanced technology and more diligent work will improve his company's system.

Musk said in Monday's email Tesla would still rapidly hire people to fill critical positions "to support the Model 3 production ramp and future product development".

Mr Schwall was the electric carmaker's main technical contact with United States safety investigators.

On 2 May Musk said Tesla would conduct "a reorganisation restructuring" during May, without providing more details.

On Sunday, the N.T.S.B. said it needs Tesla to decode the data recorded by the vehicle.

"We've been doing a thorough search of our service records, and we can not find anything suggesting that the customer ever complained to Tesla about the performance of Autopilot", Tesla said in a statement.

Witnesses said the Tesla did not brake prior to impact.

In a Twitter post on Monday, Musk denied a Wall Street Journal report that Tesla had rejected a system that would have tracked driver eye movement when using Autopilot for cost reasons.
