Hidden Pages in Anne Frank's Diary Deciphered After 75 Years

Two pages Anne Frank covered with brown masking paper in her now world-famous diary are secret no more, a team of Dutch researchers announced on Tuesday.

Almost 76 years after Anne Frank went into hiding from the Nazis during World War II, two previously hidden pages from her famous diary have been uncovered for the first time thanks to digital technology.

The pages are dated from 1942, when Anne was just 13-years-old.

"Anne Frank writes about sexuality in a disarming way", says Anne Frank House director Ronald Leopold.

"The "dirty" jokes and the passage on sex education are not exceptional in Anne's texts as a whole".

Anne kept more than one version of her writings after hearing on the radio that the Dutch government, which was in exile at the time, meant to publish personal accounts of those who suffered under the German occupation. Others, including matters that usually preoccupy a teenage mind, she kept to herself.

Her diary, written during her time in hiding, is one of the most moving testimonies of the war, and more than 30 million copies have been sold.

Frank's inclusion of sexual material in her diaries makes sense-during her 25 months of hiding, she matured from a young girl into a young woman and even conducted a brief romantic relationship with Peter van Pels, a boy who hid with the Frank family.

In 2016, during a "regular check on the condition of the diaries" conducted by the Anne Frank House, it was chose to examine "two whole pages [that were] covered up with brown gummed paper", according to the museum.

Anne died at a concentration aged 15 after her family were arrested, but her diary was published by her father Otto - the only surviving family member - in 1947.

One joke reads: "Do you know why the German Wehrmacht girls are in the Netherlands?"

"She starts with an imaginary person whom she is telling about sex, so she creates a kind of literary environment to write about a subject she's maybe not comfortable with", Bruijn told the Times. "As mattresses for the soldiers", read one of the jokes she related.

The BBC reports that the pages also contain Anne's musings on giving "the talk" to someone else, and reveal that her father had told her what prostitutes were.

The Anne Frank House Museum said at a presentation that it, and several Dutch historical institutes, were able to reproduce the lost pages after years of study by shining a light through them and photographing them in high resolution.

She also described periods as "a sign that she is ripe to have relations with a man but one doesn't do that of course before one is married".

On the official Anne Frank website, Jacqueline wrote about her relationship with Anne.
