Poland says European Union needs more 'empathy' toward US over Iran deal

Disregarding the new rounds of Tehran-EU talks over the future of Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or Iran's nuclear deal with world powers, Shamkhani underlined that his country would never renegotiate the 2015 nuclear deal, adding that Tehran would revise cooperation with the Europeans if they fail to defend interests of both sides.

Trump has complained that the Iran accord did not address Iran's ballistic missile program, its nuclear activities beyond 2025 or its role in conflicts in Yemen and Syria.

Former and current United Nations and USA nuclear experts focused on the technical aspects of what was a remarkably granular document- to the chagrin of its detractors - insisting that the Iran deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), includes some of the strictest and most intrusive nuclear inspections ever designed.

But this has proven hard, with many European firms alarmed at the specter of far-reaching US financial penalties.

"Another solution that some promote is for Iran to go out of NPT or at least reconsider and revisit our nuclear doctrine", the official said. "But I'm sorry to say we haven't seen the Plan B yet".

The Iranian diplomat added, the Islamic Republic needs a guarantee it will be able to continue to sell its oil on world markets, have global banking access and broad trade protections.

After Friday's meeting, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told reporters discussions would continue. Rather, the 12 demands, along with the threat of economic sanctions, are part of Washington's aggressive negotiation strategy and are meant to increase Tehran's fears that regime change might eventually occur.

But US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday threatened the Islamic Republic with "the strongest sanctions in history" if it did not change its behaviour in the Middle East.

Solana started negotiations with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in 2003 when he was the European Union's foreign policy chief and Rouhani was chief nuclear negotiator under reformist President Mohammad Khatami. "We'll try to cling to the deal, but ... we're under no illusions".

Since President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the accord this month, European states have been scrambling to ensure Iran gets enough economic benefits to persuade it to stay in the deal and keep limits on its nuclear activities.

KENYON: But as the Iranian official pointed out today, the JCPOA is not an economic deal; it's a security deal.

Pompeo has called for the negotiation of a new deal that would go far beyond the single focus of the nuclear agreement and would have the status of a formal treaty.

Iran has so far benefited less from the accord than it had initially hoped, partly because of remaining USA sanctions that have deterred major Western investors from doing business with Tehran. They will also want assurances that all parties will continue to buy Iranian oil.

The 2015 deal concluded under the Obama administration dealt only with the nuclear program.

The U.N. atomic watchdog policing the pact said on Thursday Iran continued to comply with the terms of the deal, but could be faster and more proactive in allowing snap inspections.

Referring to United States recent withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal, Shamkhani said, "There is no logical reason to negotiate with a country that does not abide by its commitments".
