Lava from Kilauea volcano destroys Hawai'i County mayor's home

Lava from Hawaii's erupting Kilauea volcano has destroyed more than 150 homes in a rural Big Island district, including that of Big Island Mayor Harry Kim.

However, it was clear Monday that the vast majority of the approximately 500 homes in Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland are gone.

County officials say there are 279 homes between the two coastal communities, and most are feared to be destroyed.

County Managing Director Wil Okabe said his own vacation home in Kapoho Beach Lots was also threatened.

Thousands in the Puna area had to evacuate after lava fissures started opening in neighbourhoods a month ago.

When asked at a news conference Monday about the number of evacuations, he said he didn't have a good estimate because up to 80% of the houses in some areas are vacation rentals. As of Tuesday morning, lava has created new land and extended 0.7 miles into Kapoho Bay.

SES-12 will operate in the Ku and Ka-bands with a total of 76 active transponders and eight antennas. The good side of all this is it actually extends our (on orbit) life capability from 15 to 22 years.

The latest Kilauea eruption began on May 3 and has unleashed towering clouds of ash, hurled bombs of lava, and dumped rivers of molten rock into the tropical countryside, engulfing lush green landscapes and serene neighborhoods without discretion. Hundreds are now staying in emergency shelters.

Ige is coming to Hilo Thursday to meet with Kim, Snyder said, and the main focus will be on fast-tracking temporary housing. "It's hard because obviously a lot of people have lost a lot more than just a attractive place to visit and memories".

"I'm kind of at peace, actually", Johnson said of potentially losing his home of 28 years. At the adjacent Kapoho Beach lots to the north, "just a few homes" are left standing, she added.

"The difference between our June 3rd and June 5th images are dramatic, with lava completely filling Kapoho Bay by yesterday afternoon", a spokesperson for the company said in a statement.

Thousands have been evacuated from the area, but officials fear that up to a dozen residents who chose to stay could be dead. She said it would be some time before precise losses were confirmed.

Authorities say the Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii's Big Island has destroyed at least 117 homes. (Reuters/Terray Sylvester) Lava threatens homes on the outskirts of Pahoa.
