Study finds women with early breast cancer may avoid chemotherapy

Figueredo explained the 9 year-long study like this: Researchers took more than 10,000 women with the most common type of breast cancer that's node-negative estrogen sensitive cancer.

Judy Perkins is the first woman in the world to have her breast cancer completely eradicated using a technique to turbocharge her immune system. Her cancer did not respond to any treatments, including chemotherapy and hormone therapy, until this one- time treatment with more personalized immunotherapy.

Phyllis Laccetti, a participant in the TailorX breast cancer study, at her home in Ossining, NY.

The study was supported by the National Cancer Institute, the American College of Surgeons, Cancer and Leukemia Group B, NSABP Foundation, NCIC Clinical Trials Group, North Central Cancer Treatment Group, and Southwest Oncology Group.

A sample of the tumour is tested after surgery for 21 genetic markers, which indicate if it could grow and spread.

Thousands of breast cancer patients may be safely spared gruelling chemotherapy following a landmark study.

Another study presented at Sunday's conference found that Merck's immunotherapy drug Keytruda worked better than chemo as initial treatment for most people with the most common type of lung cancer, and with far fewer side effects, noted USA Today.

"The impact is tremendous", study leader, Dr. Joseph Sparano of Montefiore Medical Center in NY, told the Associated Press.

Lava flow from spewing fissure threatens escape route on Hawaii's Big Island
Hawaii County spokeswoman Janet Snyder says as of Monday, June 4, 2018, lava burned down 117 homes. "It stings", he said. Hawaii Civil Defence Administrator Talmadge Magno has advised people to stand at least 1,000 feet back from the area.

For women under 50 with a score of 0 to 15, chemo could be skipped. Most women who fit this criteria need only surgery and hormone therapy, he said.

Brawley said that in addition to offering patients and doctors peace of mind about forgoing chemotherapy, the findings will prevent tens of thousands of breast cancer patients each year from the debilitating and harmful risks associated with the treatment, including hair loss, nausea, vomiting and being at risk for leukemia and congestive heart failure. Oncotype DX has spurred the trend, and is likely to accelerate it.

While IM-MS nodes can be treated with radiation therapy, concerns about the side effects of increasing the radiation area to the chest has limited such use. "We knew we were overtreating a lot of women with chemotherapy, in our gut. It was all gone", she said. Tuttle was diagnosed with breast cancer last August.

Overall survival was also higher in the group given this radiation treatment (73.2%) compared to control patients (70.8%).

While much more study is needed, researchers say because all cancers have mutations, this approach could potentially be used to treat many different types of cancer.

He added that it was important that the federal government funded the study because the pharmaceutical industry has little interest in sponsoring trials that result in a reduction of treatment.

This could affect up to 70,000 women a year in the USA and many more worldwide, the study noted. Data on premenopausal women and those younger than 50 who scored at the higher end of the intermediate-risk range, 16 to 25, was analyzed separately.

"Oncologists have been getting much smarter about dialing back treatment so that it doesn't do more harm than good", said Steven Katz, a University of MI researcher who examines medical decision-making.
