New Zealand PM gives birth to girl

Ardern's pregnancy has been global news since it was first announced on 19 January, shortly after she won office, with the Labour Party leader vowing to be "Prime Minister and a mum".

Bakhtawar tweeted "congratulations" to Ardern after the announcement, and shared a link to a news story on how Bhutto showed it was possible to be a mother and a prime minister.

Ms Ardern wrote formally to Mr Peters last month outlining her expectations of their respective roles.

Ardern plans to take six weeks of leave before returning to office, in which time her deputy, Winston Peters, will be in charge instead.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gave birth to her first child, a girl, on Thursday, Ms Ardern said in a posting on Instagram.

Ardern, 37, and partner Clarke Gayford, 40, confirmed the news from Auckland City Hospital, saying, "Welcome to our village wee one".

Her due date was Sunday 17 June.

The National Party is biding its time; it still holds Winston Peters responsible for not giving it the numbers to govern after the election and will highlight any mistakes he makes.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Australia's Labor Party leader Bill Shorten also congratulated the couple on the birth.

Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto was the first world leader to give birth while in office.

Ardern is a remarkable woman who crashes through glass ceilings with apparent ease.

Prime Minister Ardern made the comments during her final press conference ahead of the baby's arrival.

When announcing the pregnancy, Ardern said she and Gayford were surprised they were able to conceive naturally. One of the first things her Labour-led coalition did when it was sworn into office in October 2017 was to increase paid parental leave to 22 weeks, beginning in July. She has said she's confident the government will continue to run smoothly in her absence. She and Gayford had "been clear we wanted to be parents but had been told we would need help for that to happen".

They haven't yet revealed the baby's name.

The first female prime minister was Sirima Bandaranaike, who was elected to lead Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in 1960.
