Prince William visits scene where wife Kate lived with family

Britain's Prince William arrived in Israel on Monday, the first member of the royal family to make an official visit to the Jewish state and the Palestinian territories.

During the visit, William and Jordan's Crown Prince Hussein stopped in front of an enlarged photo on an easel that showed the Duchess of Cambridge, her father and younger sister Pippa posing against the backdrop of the Jerash ruins. He is expected to tour the Western Wall, Muslim and Christian holy sites, and occupied Palestinian territories.

Though the trip is being billed as non-political, and places a special emphasis on technology and joint Israeli-Arab projects, the prince is meeting with Israeli and Palestinian leaders and visiting sites at the heart of the century-old conflict.

Before settling down to soccer, William spoke at a garden reception at the British Embassy, praising Britain's historic ties with Jordan and the kingdom's commitment to hosting Syrian and Palestinian refugees.

During the trip, William, per People, said Kate wished she could've been there, as she lived in Jordan for three years with her family.

After seeing a display of shoes left behind by Jews killed in a Nazi extermination camp, Prince William told reporters: "Terrifying".

He will then travel to the residence of Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he will be welcomed to Israel by the politician and his wife before meeting the country's President Reuven Rivlin at his residence.

"We know some of the politics are hard, but this is not a political visit".

He added: "United Jerusalem has been the capital of Israel for 3,000 years and no distortion in the tour itinerary can change that reality".

Israel seized the West Bank and east Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Six-Day War.

Ambassador Quarrey insisted the wording merely reflected decades of terminology used by British governments.

The duke's visit comes during a period of increased tension in the region.

William was reportedly disappointed to miss the England v Panama game on Sunday afternoon as he was travelling to Jordan.

Yad Vashem's Chairman Avner Shalev will accompany Prince William who will participate in a memorial ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance, visit the Children's Memorial, and sign the Yad Vashem Guest Book.
