Trump to avoid London protests with tour of English country homes

Later on Friday, Trump and his wife will travel to Windsor Castle to meet Queen Elizabeth.

Malin Baker Bogue, 28, who works in government relations and moved to Britain from the United States in 2015, said she was not a fan of Trump despite being a Republican but was still surprised by the anger he provoked.

They will move on to Chequers for a working lunch and bilateral talks on a range of global issues, followed by a press conference.

The itinerary for Thursday and Friday confirms the US president will stay at the US Ambassador's House in Regent's Park overnight.

The commitment to a bilateral deal followed remarks about Trump's upcoming trip to the United Kingdom, where the president is scheduled to meet with both Prime Minister Theresa May and Queen Elizabeth II.

Most recently, the separation of migrant children and parents at the US-Mexico border reignited calls for May to call off Trump's visit.

Trump is steering clear of the mass protests in central London that will mark his first visit to Britain as president on July 12 and 13.

But there are concerns that anti-Trump protests in London could overshadow the trip.

The US President is due to arrive on Thursday afternoon (July 12), straight from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

The prime minister is not expected to travel to Scotland during Mr Trump's visit, which comes at a critical point for the government, with Brexit fast approaching and ambitions to strike a trade deal with the US.

The Prime Minister's spokesperson said: "We are a free and open democracy and we believe in the right to protest".

Thousands are also expected to line the streets of London during the two-day visit.

The powwow between the two leaders, whose countries are the closest of allies, will come three days before Mr. Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

Despite some pomp and ceremony, it will be "far from the original state visit promised to President Trump" and remains what is deemed a working trip, Robbins added. As head of state, Her Majesty met with every U.S. President since 1952.

Asked whether the president was seeking to avoid protesters, Mr. Johnson said: "The president is not avoiding anything".

"He's really ready to step up on that the minute we get the go-ahead to do it", Mr. Johnson said.

And while the president is conducting his meetings, the first lady, Melania, will have an agenda of her own, in the company of her opposite number, Philip.

Protestors will be on standby to race to one of Trump's two golf resorts in Scotland in case he visits. In a crowdfunding request, they wrote that they want the balloon to shadow the president, "haunting the skies - and hopefully the dreams - of the stain on the office of President that is Donald Trump Senior".

The monumental 18th-century country house, built for the first Duke of Marlborough as a reward for his military victories, was the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, a personal hero of the president.
