Mesut Ozil's Germany tenure was already 'over' before retirement - Lothar Matthaus

Turkish lawmaker and former footballer Alpay Ozalan supported the stance Germany's Mesut Ozil took against racism.

"It is with a heavy heart and after much consideration that because of recent events, I will no longer be playing for Germany at global level whilst I have this feeling of racism and disrespect", Ozil wrote.

He has 92 caps and has been voted the national team's player of the year five times since 2011 by fans.

Ozil, 29, dropped a bombshell by announcing his retirement from Germany duty and accused the president of the German FA, Reinhard Grindel, of racism.

"I'm aware that the picture of us caused a huge response in the German media, and whilst some people may accuse me of lying or being deceitful, the picture we took had no political intentions".

Asked if Ozil would be missed, Matthaus told ESPN FC: "No, we have a lot of good players, and when some player cannot perform like before, we have option to give the new generation the chance to help us to make the results like, for example, 2014".

A survey of 5,000 Germans by t-online.de showed 49.7 percent think Grindel should resign over the saga.

The Arsenal playmaker was criticised in Germany for his meeting with Turkish president Recep Erdogan in May during a visit to London.

When Germany crashed out of the World Cup in Russian Federation after the knock-out stage, Ozil was made a scapegoat by some pundits in a group of senior players who failed to perform.

Israel also sealed off the Zikim beach near the Gaza Strip and ordered Israelis in the area to remain close to shelters. The militant Islamic Hamas that rules Gaza said three of the Palestinians killed were members of the group.

"It is with a heavy heart and after much consideration that because of recent events, I will no longer be playing for Germany at worldwide level while I have this feeling of racism and disrespect", the player said.

Despite distancing himself from the situation before and during the World Cup, Ozil continued to be criticised and this vitriol only increased after Germany's shock exit.

With Ozil gone, Loew will have to find his replacement with Paris Saint Germain's Julian Draxler or Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus as the leading candidates.

He pointed out that Erdogan also met the Queen and Prime Minister Theresa May while in England and said he would have been "disrespecting his ancestors' roots" had he not posed for photographs with the Turkish president. "Thanks. Mister assist", Boateng wrote on Instagram. "You can be proud of your many achievements".

To claim he is anything other than 100 per cent committed to Germany is madness, but Grindel should not be surprised by Sunday's statement.

Between his debut in 2009 and his final appearance in June, Ozil played nearly 100 times for Germany, helping them win the World Cup in 2014 and even was voted as Germany's national player of the year on five separate occasions.

"Now there is the chance for a younger, maybe even a better player" to come into the Germany side, Matthaeus added.

Germany's Social Democrat Justice Minister Katarina Barley said: "It's alarming if a great German football player like Mesut Ozil no longer feels wanted in his country".
