Red Planet Mars Comes Closer to Earth Like Never Before Today

Red Planet Mars Comes Closer to Earth Like Never Before Today

This will also be the closest the red planet comes to Earth until October 2020. Earth takes roughly a year (or 365.25 days, to be exact) to complete a revolution around the sun, while Mars does it in 1.88 years (approximately 687 days). Mars won't be that close to Earth until 2287, according to a NASA update.

At that time it passed by at a distance of only 55.8 million kilometers, the closest it had come in 59,619 years.

Earth and Mars align in opposition about every two years (fun fact: this is why most NASA missions to the Red Planet are at least two years apart - to take advantage of the closer distance). During opposition, a planet will appear larger than usual, and its brightest colours are visible.

Transforming planets as a pre-cursor to colonisation is a staple of science fiction, and an aspiration for individuals including Elon Musk, whose company SpaceX uses images of terraforming Mars in its promotional material.

When Mars knocked on our door in 2003, it was the first time the Red Planet came that close in some 60,000 years, according to Space.com.

Maddow also noted that the White House transcript and video hadn't been updated, more than a week after the news conference. Journalism ethicists questioned why the White House still hadn't updated its transcript.

"Mars is invading us tonight", said observatory director Ed Krupp.

The event, called Mars Close Approach, occurs when Mars is 35.8 million miles away from Earth, closer than normal. "Look to the south tonight to see the Red Planet shining bright". It will be wonderful this year because the moon will be pretty much out of the sky by then, and the meteors or "shooting stars" will be much more visible in the darker skies. Just using the deposits near the surface would require extensive strip mining, and going after all the Carbon dioxide attached to dust particles would require strip mining the entire planet to a depth of around 100 yards.

The snapshot of Mars, captured on July 18, reveals that it is in the midst of a global dust storm, with spring in the southern hemisphere.

Starting today, Mars will also appear to shrink in size to observers due to the goring distance between Earth and the Red Planet.

However, for planets which do not harbour any life - and certainly not complex life - it requires far more than introducing species which human society lives beside.
