Trump Lawyer Unsure if Collusion With Russia a Crime

The Trump legal team suggested several weeks ago limiting some topics to written questions and doing an interview more on collusion, as CNN has previously reported.

He said: "I have been sitting here looking in the federal code trying to find collusion as a crime.Collusion is not a crime".

Trump and key members of his team have been repeatedly rejecting all the accusations concerning collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

The former NY mayor, a former federal prosecutor, made the statement in an interview with CNN where he argued that the hacking itself constituted the criminal act - and said that Trump did not pay Russian Federation for its election hacking.

Now, however, the president and his personal lawyer are doubling down on the idea that collusion, even if it did occur, isn't illegal.

Mr Mueller's team recently indicted a dozen Russian intelligence agents for hacking into Democratic party computers.

In a subsequent tweet, the president questioned why Mr. Mueller isn't investigating Hillary Clinton's campaign and its work with former British spy Christopher Steele, who authored the infamous Trump dossier.

Of course, Giuliani is correct in his analysis that collusion, in and of itself, is not a crime. "I don't think they have any evidence he did anything wrong".

Trump and Giuliani's stance has moved from there was "no collusion" to "collusion is not a crime" after the U.S. President's former lawyer Michael Cohen alleged that then candidate Trump knew about a meeting between his son and a Russian lawyer at the Trump Tower in NY.

A knowledgeable source told NBC News that Cohen is willing to inform Mueller that Trump Jr. told his father about the meeting, contradicting Trump Jr.'s congressional testimony in May 2017.

Trump also argued Mueller could not be impartial in the probe because he worked for a law firm that had represented Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The former NY mayor said if Trump is interviewed by Mueller's legal team, "Our real concern is they're going to set up a perjury trap", attempting to catch Trump, who often misstates facts, in a lie, which is a criminal offense.

The ball is in the Trump team's court, two additional sources told CNN.

Democrats on Capitol Hill criticized Trump and his lawyers for their shifting assertions. Rudy Giuliani is a bully and a liar. "It goes on and on". And I have said that over and over again - collusion is not a crime'.

But there are plenty of specific laws on the books that could apply if Trump's presidential campaign is found to have collaborated with Moscow, including a conspiracy to defraud the United States. "That's simply the facts and the law".

Giuliani also taunted Mueller in an interview with Axios published Monday. Blumenthal said he wants Trump come back before the committee and clarify his statements.

"Michael Cohen is a bully and a liar".

Speaking later Monday with CNN's Dana Bash, Giuliani said, "He owes us a response".

President Donald Trump listens during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte in the Oval Office of the White House, Monday, July 30, 2018, in Washington. His legal team has long opposed the interview.

"It's not particularly helpful".
