Russian Federation is continuing efforts to interfere in United States politics: intel chief

"We're here to tell the American people that we acknowledged the threat, it is real, it is continuing and we're doing everything we can to have an election the American people can have trust in", Coats said.

Trump later walked back those statements amid widespread criticism, saying he accepted the "conclusion that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election took place", adding a caveat that it "could be other people also".

The U.S. intelligence community remains concerned about election security, and Russian Federation is still trying to interfere in American elections, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said on Thursday.

Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, said unequivocally that hackers, under the direction of Putin, were attempting to sow discord among Americans. He gave no details.

Responding to questions, Coats claimed that Russian Federation used numerous ways in which they want to influence domestic political environment, through media, social media, bots, actors they hire and through proxies.

"We know there are others who have the capability and may be considering influence activities", he said. He said the Department of Defense was "taking active measures to protect election security including monitoring our adversaries".

Russian Federation is not the only country that has an interest in trying to influence American domestic political environment, a top United States spymaster has said, while asserting the Trump Administration was taking concrete steps to prevent such efforts, both for the mid-term elections in November and for the 2020 presidential polls.

Congress is now considering a sanctions bill created to deter Russian Federation. Now states make their own rules.

Apparently we're in the same boat as the head of USA intelligence. We haven't seen that robust effort from them so far, ' Coats said.

"This is about exploiting the fault lines that exist in our society and building on what was done in 2016, and it isn't confined to the internet - it includes print and television, as well, in some cases using existing platforms that predate the 2016 election", the official said.
