Diocese of Venice Bishop on Pope Francis' Death Penalty Stance

He was responding to a question from The Tablet about whether a shift in the Church's position was occurring after the Pope used a speech to call for the "global abolition" of the death penalty while talking about the "right of the environment" when addressing the the United Nations in NY.

Pope Francis' decree that the death penalty is "inadmissible" in all cases could pose a dilemma for Roman Catholic politicians and judges in the United States who are faced with whether to strictly follow the tenets of their faith or the rule of law.

Francis has long opposed the death penalty, saying that the execution of a human being is fundamentally against the teachings of Christ because, by definition, it excludes the possibility of redemption.

Amnesty International reports that more than 20,000 people are on death row worldwide.

Recourse to the death penalty, following a fair trial, had always been "an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good", it previously said.

"Two years ago, in October 2016, the Texas Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement calling for the abolition of the death penalty, denouncing its effects not only on victims and others immediately affected, but also on society".

"In addition to papal proclamations, Catholic bishops in every state that have the death penalty have taken stands to see an end to this practice". But in May, Pope Francis approved a major change to the doctrine that says capital punishment is wrong in all cases.

United States outlines plan to create national 'Space Force'
He says advances by China and Russian Federation have increased the need for the U.S.to elevate its space efforts. The Pentagon's existing military branches are: the Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Army and Air Force.

I eagerly await the new, forceful and reversed positions on the death penalty from all the Catholic politicians who regularly explain their anti-abortion stance as "the teaching of my church".

Blair said Thursday: "For everybody, the fundamental message here is that wanting the death penalty out of sheer vengeance is not a spiritually or morally good thing to do". The move could also reshape discussion about the issue in the United States, where some Catholic politicians - such as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, whose state carries out the highest number of executions - have supported the death penalty.

In a letter to bishops August 2, Cardinal Luis Ladaria, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said, 'The new revision. situates itself in continuity with the preceding Magisterium while bringing forth a coherent development of Catholic doctrine'.

"Malacanang knows this. I don't think they wil waste their political capital on the death penalty bill", said Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon.

"It is still a priority of the administration to reimpose the death penalty for serious drug-related offenses".

"If we say we are for dignity of all life, that includes innocent and guilty as well", she told The Associated Press. Today, however, prison is more than just punishment and in many countries sophisticated detention centres more than adequately protect the public.

Cuomo noted that he made the decision in solidarity with Pope Francis and to honor his father, former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, who served at his post from 1983 to 1994; the elder Cuomo recently passed away in 2015.
